Outdoor Cooking

Setting up a safe and efficient outdoor cooking area is an essential step for campers and preppers. While I’m assuming you already have a kitchen in your home, you may have to do a lot of your cooking outdoors if/when the power is out — and this will necessitate having an ideal cooking location.

Toward preparing your outdoor cooking area, ensure you have each of the following elements:

• tarps to form the walls and the roof of the designated cooking area

• a windbreak that shields the flames and ensures proper airflow, minimizing smoke buildup

• portable stoves or grills, lightweight cookware, and suitable fuel sources to form the core of your cooking equipment. Alternatively, you can build your own DIY cooking equipment, which I’ll discuss below.

• handwashing stations, sanitizers, and utensil-cleaning solutions

• lighting in the form of headlamps or lanterns

• lightweight chairs or cushions to provide seating around the cooking area. Shelter options, such as canopies or tarps, offer protection from the elements.
